Qian Wang - Project 3 - Week 5

 Final

Project 1, week 5 - Mass + Void + Site

This is my refined contour map. I slightly changed the contours on it to give it more of a natural look. The idea I have in my head is that it is a headland overlooking a bay (the water line is the brown).

This was an initial idea based on my contoured acetate model. The main idea I got from my acetate model was circular hallways so I've tried to incorporate that idea into each one of my models.

This is the same model but from a different angle.

This is a different model but as you can see it still uses 'tunnels', this model uses more space and levels on the model compared to the first model.

Birds eye view of the model.

This is the latest model I've come up with, it uses circular, tunnels but also uses straight lines, i think this resembles my acetate model better. I also think that if this were in a real world setting it would harness the views very well.

Thursday's crit: information

Hi everyone,
As explained during the studio today, the crit will start at 1 o'clock on Thursday (max. 10 minutes per student) , everybody has to attend the whole session.
The following students will have to present their work between 1 and 2:20 pm which means you have to pin it BEFORE as we start at 1 ! :
-Marisha
-Sameer
-Shayal
-Karl
-Dion
-Romana
-Sherry
After that we'll have a break and the other students will have to pin their work during this time.
It's gonna be a group critic which means everybody is welcome to give his opinion and advice about the work of each student.
By the end of the session, i'll give you a feedback about your crit and advises to improve it during the 2 weeks of the mid-semester break, please don't leave before i give it to you.
I can't wait to see your work and also get prepared to present your work the best way you can.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any question.
Good work
See you very soon
Marie

Danielle Fitzsimmons, Project One, Week Three

This is my acetate model. My paper, wood and wire models are designed in relation to this model. They are all restricted to the basic shape and outlook of the diamond primitive but each express differences; such as influence of media malleability, strength, density and ideas through the contouring on the acetate model.

My Paper  model was influenced by the darker lined contours, how the groupings had their long curved parts spread out. I used this feature of the contour by warping, duplicating and connecting each one to others and through others. This technique I found created overlap and shadows over each interior parts allowing an applied space be available in between and through the long curved  parts and the layers as well.

In being the most time consuming and difficult to construct, I found the wood model to be most successful in representing space and depth. Through following the lighter lines of the acetate model and emphasising the angularity of the contours, I found the lines as individual stand simply, but when connected and interconnected, become much more complex and elegant. Through the angular and sharp applied spaces, you see the depth being created with overlap and shadow which allows the observer to overcomplicate the structure.

With the wire being the easiest to navigate and bend to my imagination, I found this model to be swift and fluid. With wire being very linear and thin, I realised it to be a bit more difficult to capture space and depth. My strategy with wire was to focus on the hard line contours and bend the wire to their form, then to create the structure by composing the copied contours, not only on the exterior, but also interiorly. The built interior holds the structure together by balance.

Labels !

One more thing, when you post , please use the labels with name, week and subject of your work , don't post anything without it please!
Thanks
Marie

Danielle Fitzsimmons, Project One, Week Two

this is my exploded geometric contour drawing. what I have found with this is that it is rather balanced and asymmetrical. as a specification to my primitive shape, I need to be able to show evenly the whole space of the drawing in order to not miss so much detail of the contour.

These are my experimental primitives, what I found with my experiments is that I want to depict as many different ways of documenting space as I could. what I found that best solved my aim was to have many faces on the chosen shape, also having a dynamic way of presenting the different shape views through the asotate.

This is my chosen primitive. I found that it relates well to the specifications that I set for myself in finding a primitive that is able to present the window of different spaces dynamically and multiple at once, as well as documenting that space in many different perspectives.

This is part of the draft net of my chosen primitive. the spaces of the net are not joined so I could express the range of the contour drawing extensively. I tested it out on paper with the contours on it to see if the effect was successful. I found that with the range of contours, it gave the asotate model much more distinction and range of hardline to softline contours.

This is my final asotate model. what I have learned this week was the range of space you can create with different shapes. also the ways you can control what space you want to create using the contours and primitive shapes. What I found interesting with the asotate model, was giving depth by projecting through one face and connecting to not just one or two faces on the other side, but being able to connect to three contour faces through the asotate.

Myles Durrant - Project 1, Week 5 - Mass + Void + Site

Project 1, Week 5 - Mass + Void + Site

Here is my finished Site. It has taken a long time to develop but it is now complete. Because my original Klecky is so symmetrical i have used to the contours to create some asymmetry to make it look more like a realistic site as no are would have perfect symmetry. I did this by creating varying degrees of height and slope on each side of my site.
I built the site from the bottom up to create the varying contours and heights. I found this to be the easiest way to do it as it also made it easier to plan.

Next I am going to work on developing my models to create a space in which would form a function for a person/ people. My ideas at the moment are to utilise the highest point as it would create the best view of the rest of the site. I also wan to try designing the model in 1:100 Scale and 1:200 to see what fits best.

With my site I look at it as an expanse of land that breaks off a main land. The model is mainly surrounded by low level areas either at or just above sea level at its lowest point. Because of this I see in my model that people would come from the highest point and would have to climb down and around to navigate the landscape.

Here is my original klecky compared to my contour model to see the inspiration used to create this site and how the two have developed.

1:200 & 1:100 Scale From highest point.
Site could be represented as a valley in the background

Representation of a cave can be seen here.

This could be a waterfall flowing into a valley.
Also 1:200 and 1:100 scale people to represent size and scale.

These photos show my attempts at trying to create a space using the shapes my original primitive model created.
I started trying to work with my scale at 1:100 and  was unsuccessful.
I noticed the scale of my model compared to the site was too big and looked
very un-natural, even though the scale person fit.

I have created many variations of my model to create a space in which a person could occupy. I started by making the general shapes found in my primitive and assembled them together within my landscape. i tried create spaces within the model as well as using the relationship between the model and the site to create other varying spaces. All models are at 1:200 scale.

This is my final Site + Void model. I aimed to create the various shapes inspired from my paper model and arrange them in such a way that it can work work with and create various space. My Aim was to make it a habitable space for someone not only as a kind of shelter but also to improve accessibility around the site.

I placed my model near the highest point as to utilise the view of the site. The model consists of multiple layers which I thought helped the void + site come together. When placing the model on the site I wanted to do it in such a way that the model used the site to create various internal and external space. The thickness of the material was made to give the perception of a strong thick safe internal space, however i kept everything open as to not give a trapped enclosed feeling.

This is my final model. I have made my contour model again with foam board as it made my model much cleaner and crisp, as the cardboard was hard to cut smooth.

I have also made my void model again using wood this time. Wood was a much better material to use for my specific model. It was easier to get the shapes i wanted and i could sand it all down smooth making it look much neater. However I painted my model grey. I wanted it to be a neutral colour as I did not want to wooden grain to be seen. If i showed the wood grain my model would automatically be conceptualised as a wooden structure rather than looking at the actual object. I did not want it to be a distraction.
